Trawlers on the Quay and Sustainability

Wherever we go and whatever we do, we have some impact on the environment and community.   By making positive choices during your visit here, you can help to look after Cornwall and this special area, ensuring that it retains everything that is special about it for your next visit. You can have an impact right here in South East Cornwall and at home, by thinking about these 5 key issues.

  1.  Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
In South East Cornwall we take our recycling very seriously, as we hope you do at home!  Say no to packaging where possible, especially plastic bags. You will find recycling banks in most main car parks across the area.  In Cornwall we work hard to recycle all we can.  Please help us by making use of the recycling system in your holiday accommodation, and asking for one if you can’t find it. We recycle everything we can at Trawlers – including some of our guests… raw vegetable waste for example goes home to be composted and is re used in our window box displays. Our suppliers take home boxes and re use them, all packaging is recycled, along with wine and soft drinks water bottles. We estimate that approximately 5% (by weight)  of our ‘waste’ unfortunately has to go to ‘landfill’, but this is due to current government restrictions on the recycling of ‘cooked’ restaurant waste material – but this may be subject to change.

2.  Reduce traffic: walk, cycle or use public transport
Walking and cycling are great ways to see the area without adding to traffic. Use public transport if you need to travel to your start point, but try exploring near to where you are staying - there are some fantastic places to see right on your doorstep!. There are more and more fully accessible routes becoming available, ensuing access for all, too. Ask your accommodation provider for details or pop into your local TIC. Trawlers also has leaflets in the Restaurant on the area and public transport. Much of our produce is ‘walked’ to the restaurant by our suppliers - particularly fish - we aim to cut out ‘food miles’ wherever we can. Mark had a byke for Christmas and says he will cycle to work - time will tell!

  3.  Stay Local, Eat Local, Buy Local, See Local
Support local producers and services - this way your visit has a real benefit to the communities of Cornwall. And you get to see and taste the real quality that Cornwall offers. Visit Farmers Markets, farm shops, village stores, pubs, restaurants and cafes. Much of our distinctive culture is evident in the hundreds of community events that happen throughout the year and are well worth supporting – and the food and drink is simply fantastic. Trawlers has a local purchasing policy and the majority of our produce is sourced from Cornwall. Our fish is landed on the quay here in Looe and our meats are reared on the lush pastures of the West Looe valley.

  4.  Chill out – switch off….
Enjoy a fabulous, light touch holiday…..switch off lights and dripping taps; use the voluntary laundry card scheme where you see it, so that only towels that need washing are laundered; every single effort helps protect and enhance our beautiful environment. It takes a moment and it’s all worth it! We try and conserve both electricity and water at Trawlers. Our lighting, where possible, is energy efficient, we use ‘hippo’s’ in our loos (!) and rainwater to nourish our Cornish grown window displays

  5.  Follow the Countryside Code: respect – protect – enjoy.
The Countryside Code reminds us all to protect plants  and animals; take litter away; leave gates and property as you find them; keep dogs under close control; consider other people and users when visiting the countryside.

Enjoy your holiday!  Thank you!
